LGR Oddware - NEC PC-FXGA DOS/V Game Accelerator Card

Wetenschap en technologie

The NEC PC-FX console itself was considered a failure in 1994, but then came this FXGA version for MS-DOS PCs. Not only is it the full video game system on a 16-bit ISA card, but it also adds a 3D graphics chip and software development options! Also dragonfly dinosaurs.

i actually really like this concept. its what i wish PC gamign really was. PC is my platform of choice but theres something so appealing about a dedicated space for gaming, and i think is is what i would love to see PC gaming evolve into in the future. or maybe consoles evolve into this, idk. i just think it's neat.

It´s a pity you couldnt use the PC while running the games... i imagine it would have been a good solution for home office parents. Add some headphones and you are set. You do your work on the PC side, while your kid/s play on the console side.

I wonder if this was intended as development board and only marketed to consumers as an afterthought. It does not make much sense to buy this just to save the money for the cd drive (as opposed to just buying a full console). However, for developing and rapidly testing your code this is perfect.

regarding not being able to do anything on the PC whilst this was running a game, what would really be odd would to put the NEC PC-FXGA DOS/V Game Accelerator Card in one of two Amiga 2000 ISA slots, alongside an Amiga A2088 bridgeboard, which adds IBM PC compatibility to the A2000, then run DOS in an Amiga Workbench window, and boot up the game card, using the A2000's SCSI or IDE CDROM for game CD access. Then you COULD do something on the computer, because the AMIGA was multitasking ;)

Why did anyone even let you review this. Horrible. 'I don't know why these games had so many cut scenes.' What exactly did you read about this before you decided to make a video about it. Also don't like 90s anime. Might as well not even looked in its direction. This is the console of H. If the Japanese didn't throw away/burn/recycle everything we would probably have alot more of this stuff.

I own one of those CD changers, looks like mine is exactly the same but I can't know for sure. I had bought it for my Linux Server so I could fit all the distribution Discs into my Server at the same time. In Linux, it behaves as a single CD drive. The trick is that the EJECT command can change the discs. It also did an UNMOUNT first. The advantage was that when I remotely logged into my Server, I didn't had to walk down all the way from the 4th floor into the cellar into a maze of twisty little passages, all alike to change the CDs. The problem with this was whenever I made a typo, the EJECT command did just that - to eject the disc. And unlike with a tray drive, there was no way to remotely put the disc back in. Worse, with a disc stuck in the slot, the changer didn't work either. So I often had to run down the staircase from 4th floor into the cellar and enter that maze of twisty little passages, all alike to give the disc a little nudge to put it back.

Back in the day, a NEC PC based arcade hardware utilizing the PC-9800 version of this card could've been developed and marketed as competition to other arcade systems of the time instead of this device only being marketed as a game accelerator card. It's such a pity that this device along with the 3DO M2 couldn't find the chance to show their potential. I wonder if the owners of this device have ever programmed a decent demo for this device. We've seen some DogaGenie demos but it would be interesting to see what the HuC6273 chip was truly capable of back in the day.

The game you played a bit of and made a few choices then stopped is part of the Langrisser series. There is actually a community online that has done translations for those games, for when you emulate the games. I don't know if there's a specific way to play on real hardware with the translations, but I've played an SNES translation of one of the Langrisser games, and it looked like the same one you had running here. They're extremely fun games, when you can tell what's going on!
