Checking out Crystal Caves HD! Apogee's 1991 DOS Classic Remade
Games
Check it out on Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/1330890/Crystal_Caves_HD/
Apogee Software kindly sent over a preview code for the upcoming remaster of Crystal Caves, so let's take a look at it! New pixel art graphics, a fourth episode, a chiptune soundtrack, achievements, leaderboards, and even a fully-fledged level editor. It's come a ways since the MS-DOS original and I am utterly psyched!

In the video I mentioned there were some slight changes and fixes to the gameplay, so here's a link to a selection of those. It's mostly things like altered item pickups, gameplay elements being rebalanced, and other little updates to make it a better overall game. Kind of like a patch that the original never got! steamcommunity.com/app/1330890/discussions/0/4307086417516724176/ There's already been a dozen patches to this version of CCHD since that list of changes was posted though, with lots of updates contained in each one, so yeah. It's only gonna get that much better by launch, what a treat for fans like myself :)

So good. I conflated this guy and Duke Nukem into a PC version of Mario. That said, where's the Apogee Secret Agent review?

Is it possible to get the new episode with old EGA-compatible artwork (perhaps downsampled from the new VGA artwork, unless there's also new EGA artwork for it)? I.e. is the new episode available in a format that more closely fits the old episodes? Can it be plugged into the old game?

@LGR Thank you, sooo much, Clint, for showcasing Crystal Caves. I had no idea this game _even existed_ . It looks like a lot of tongue-in-cheek, platforming, hurdling, jumping, dodging, and blasting fun. It _somewhat_ reminds me of Commander Keen! I see that it's available on GOG for $6, and the HD version unlocks on Steam in 19 hours.

@OM19 MO79 Agreed. Heck, I have trouble playing the original Cave Story because it feels too much like SNES graphics combined with NES sound, so I always play Cave Story+ with the original graphics and remastered music option so it feels like SNES+SNES. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem playing games like Odallus... but I want my music to match the rest of the experience.

@DS9TREK It really is out of place. As I said elsewhere, it's like a period movie where the music is from the wrong era. Feels really off.
Kinda being a jerk about the music
This may not be what I just spent $2000 on a new gaming laptop for, but as someone who played Crystal Caves endlessly on the PCs in the computer room at school in the 90s, I MUST HAVE THIS. Also, my 8 & 6 year old sons adore old Sonic the Hedgehog games, I can see them being ALL OVER this.
If your motherboard doesn't have the built-in tiny crappy PC speaker inside the chassis then how can u hear the sound effects???
This doesn't look real high resolution graphics at all. It looks like 8-bit low resolution graphics simply blown up to high resolution.
Primož Vovk :D no vsaj znamo kako igro naredit
Back in a day where kids traded floppies with shareware games because we couldn't buy the full games. Happy memories :)
If you have any pull with the developer, do ask them to change the music to sound more Adlibby. They can keep the tunes they've come up with, but things like this matter to us purists. :)
I've looked for a Window's version of this, for years !!!! I love it. I'm going to get this weekend. Thank you so much !!!!
This game has a special place in my heart. I use to play this all the time as a kid
While not the first game I ever played, that would be Pharaoh's Tomb probably, I have very fond memories of Crystal Caves and it's awesome that it's getting new life!
Oh my god, I’ve been trying to remember what game I played on dos!! This is it!
That's a big file for this game compared to a 1.44Mb floppy disk in its original form.
So much nostalgia, will have to get the updated version
Man I wish we could get this treatment for the commander keen series. This always felts like a CK clone to me. But hey I'd love to see a lot of these old games come back with HD but maintaining the OG gameplay.
I would assume the PDF of the game manual took up the most space. They're often bigger than the games themselves, hence why they left so much of the info to the manuals to explain since floppy disks and cartridges are notoriously limited.

The Crystal Caves soriginal manual is 1 sheet of A4. ;)
Oh man these sound effects sound just like Invasion of the Vorticons
Adlib? No thank you.
I like the green mountain, it's almost exactly the same like the ones in Doki Doki Panic/Super Mario Bros. 2 usa.
This was my first game on pc as well! I cant believe there is remake version with all the volumes and level editor, it was instabuy for me and the price is great, im soo thankful youtube recommended me this! Thanks soo much for sharing
This was like, literally one of my first ever DOS games on PC after C64, are you telling me they've actually brought out a HD remaster? OMFG, I, I can't speak. =O
Got it on GOG, what a great game.
I love the intro :)
Awesome! My first game along with Secret Agent. We need an HD version of that game too!
Actually never commented before, but holy shIIITT the nostalgia!!! My friend had this game in the 90''s, so big part of me growing up. Love it. love your videos, keep it up!
Emberheart Games has an "advent calendar" event for Crystal Caves HD, and are looking for people to submit levels! The idea is that 24 people create one level each, and release them between December 1st and 24th. There aren't yet many participants. Go check the CC HD Steam page for event information!
always confused this for crystal castles (which was my first game)
3:37 THE FIRST THING MY BRAIN CELLS SAID THAT NANOSECOUND WAS KAREN FROM SPONGEBOB FOR SOME REASON
Such a cool story that a fan made something and the devs worked with him.
I remember this game Loved it as a kid i hope they do a Cosmo remake too
Don't apologize too much man! I am a huge Crystal Caves fan as it was also one of the first PC games I had ever played, and I agree with you the music sounds fine, but it feels definitely out of place.
Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure was my first game, but I sunk plenty of time into the shareware version of Crystal Caves.
Quick update, there's nearly 300 user levels out so far!
I grew up with Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure. Also available on steam. I noticed that Crystal Caves and Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure look very similar in some of the older levels and might actually have shared a few sprites and animations. Some of the sound effects are almost identical. I think you might like to have a look at Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure. @LGR
The sheer joy you had playing was heart warming lol
winning
Does it have audio files you can make fm synthesis versions of and swap or is it all restricted so you can't access it? Requiring steam is the only disappointing thing I see unless there's a non steam version. There's also a crystal dick and balls at the bottom right corner of the title screen, that's an awesome and funny thing to have.
This game looks so similar to my very first video game ever, which was Duke Nukem 1, also by Apogee.
Ingame map editor like back in the good old day. Neat!
To the Dutchies out there; the sound of an enemy dying sounds like “aardappel”.
My first video game was Monster Bash from Apogee. I was poor and only had the shareware version.
Damnit I was just thinking about Crystal Caves a couple weeks ago. Why didn't NLdron recommend me this sooner? I gotta pick up this remaster. Played the shareware version so much way back when.
This game was on the first PC we bought used. It later unfortunatly got lost. Seeing this brings me back to this times.
I'm kind of surprised to see the Apogee logo being used, until I realized Commander Keen is under "id", not Apogee , meaning there are still some Keen-like DOS games that could have official remasters/remakes.
You should cover Bubbles for msdos
As Clint said, it's weird they remade this particulart Apogee title. I mean, where's Commander Keen, Duke Nukem or Halloween Harry?
(Idk if this is possible, i never played) but what if they made a snes editon
This would be great if you didn't giggle like a school girl every 12 seconds.
*Person:* "Hey, I'm remaking your game!" *Pretty much every other company:* "What?! We're sending you a DMCA even though you're not making any money off of this!" *Apogee and Sega:* "Cool, we'll give you some money and have you release this officially."
Halloween Harry: Alien Carnage HD needs to be a thing.
This is great. Also new episode for the HD version & a level creator. Well that's just level 💯 greatness. 😃
I use to play this game all the time! Where did you get it? I need it

Available from Steam and GOG - Though the GOG version doesn't have the shared Workshop for custom levels, making it harder to share them between other players.
I'd love a similar HD remake of One Must Fall 2097.
I used to play it as a kid. Probably the first computer game I ever played for reasonable time ;) Awesome that it got a remaster!
I also played this game numerous of times during my childhood, it seemed like every computer had it i ever came across haha
A techie friend of mine (I was 11 at the time) helped me download a shareware version of this off a DDS. Such memories!
This is great! I had no idea Apogee was still around, I used to play whacky wheels and a couple other games of theirs quite a bit. I haven't heard of this one before, though. I'm really digging the NES tunes, although they're mixing platforms here. Anyways, I bought the game before even finishing the video and it'll be my first game to try on my first 1440p monitor that just arrived today! :)
Need Secret Sam HD
So easy means easy normal means normal and difficult is more difficult? Thanks for letting us know we would have never figured that out😂 j/k good vid
I had completely forgotten about this game until right now. Thank you so much for bringing back a piece of my childhood! The nostalgia was so heartwarming for me ❤️
Off topic I tried searching if you did a review for Manhunter and it doesn’t look like you did. If by chance would you be able to do a review of it at some point? I remember playing it as a kid. ( San Francisco version)
Are the sound effects from Hocus Pocus?
Ahh, that pc speaker sound when the title shows.
I loved this game. I played the shareware version when I was a broke kid.
thats duke nukems head in the sprite
Indeed AdLib would have been sweet!
Spotted one minor difference. :) Snakes and weird green slinky monsters, when killed get placed at the pixel perfect location they died in, in the HD instead of the "cell" location they used to die in the first iterations. :D
I'm excited about this. OMG, HD Crystal Caves *drools in retro nostalgia*
Crystal Caves is definitely a classic. Now, what I really want is a HD remake/remaster/sequel to Monster Bash. That game was awesome.
I remember playing this all the time
I used to always turn the music off on most games. Now I just turn it down a bit. Sadly some Nintendo games don't allow you to turn the music off or even down, making them unplayable for me. Strange how these games often have really repetitive crap music as well, (at least to my ears).
I've never played Crystal Caves, but it sure looks fun. I have an old DOS 6.22 computer I could try it on. It's a 486DX2 66Khz, so it might run too fast? I guess I'm just curious.
This is how i feel about nanosaur. Now thats a game i believe wont get a revamp or anything. But it was one of the first games i touched on a pc. Good feel good content
I hope they didn't just record the sound effects. Real-time synthesis would be so much cooler. Not to mention capable of higher sample-rates. And yes, it's definitely possible. I cobbled together a PureData patch that does the job. Just draw the inverse-frequencies into an array. Sounds pretty authentic if you overlook the fact the headphones I use have way more bass than an actual PC Speaker.
OMG dude... That rant about the games music was literally the nerdiest thing I have ever heard lol. I didn't hear anything wrong with it and thought it was nice lol. That game looks really cool btw, I added it to my Steam wishlist, thanks for bringing it to my attention :)
My first computer game I bought with my own money was something I found in a goodwill it was one of those shitty 1000 game bundles I got for $5
I always thought of that thing as the Eyebone.
I hope a remake of "Secret Agent" is done with the mentioned Adlib music.
You know, if you shoot those eggs... They become letters spelling B-O-N-U-S.
Sound effects remind me of Commander Keen.
It is for sure out now on Steam for $7.99
My first game was a 2001 game called Colobot. Classic.
If you weren't able to see it on a monitor, why does the border of the screen turn green in the original game?
Seeing you having so much fun and going on such a nostalgic trip with this title is the sort of stuff I love for on this channel. I love just seeing you talk about PC games that bring you joy like this.
They made an HD remake of Chex Quest. Almost anything's possible at this point.
Yes but what about Agent?
I still remember all the sounds
I hope, that they will remaster some other games aswell, like, let's see: Monster Bash, Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, Secret Agent (yeah, thisone is quite similar to Crystal Caves) and other... I would also like to see an updated top-down view Raptor with additional levels and enemies. That would be great.
VeeGer is a reference to V'Ger from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, while the Badlands Triangle is a reference to the Badlands, a region of space known for various plasma storms and is the hideout for the Maquis from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. 19:35 "Quadcorder" references the "tricorder", "turboelevator" is a reference to the "turbolift". 19:43 references Star Trek: Voyager. Yes, I'm THAT much of a Trekkie. 🤓🖖
there're mixing of super mario 1, 2 and 3
A Potta Gee
He is having such a blast, the only thing that would cause me the same reaction is a JJ2 remake with the same treatment (Alexander Brandon included)
Looks great, but the graphic is faaaaar too good:/
Hey LGR. Please make new series 'best pc for gaming in 1998/2000/2002/2004/...'. I have many cd's with old games (like Baldur's Gate 1), I am not able to run them on W10 and I don't remember what old pc should I look for that. The best idea is to make videos about 'making windows 98/xp virtualized pc's for gaming on new pc's' but I know it's wide and complicated subject

@WildApple / OP Plays For example, any hint how to play Chronicles of Tiddick Aassault on Dark Athena on Windows 10? It has TAGES DRM protection which doesn't work on this OS

On GOG and Steam you can buy some old games, that are "upgraded" to work on modern Windows 10 and have soma additional features (like widescreen support). Wait for sale! If you have old DOS games, you can run these with the help of DosBOX and other emulators.
maybe they should add an option to use the original sound effects
I remember the first game I ever played, I think it was Hard Hat Mack. That game sucked, but this game looks pretty good. I think I may just pick this one up. I bought both Jazz Jackrabbit games on a whim and I was surprised to find out how much I liked Jazz 1. Crystal Caves seems to hit all the right notes to what I'd like.
One of the first video games I ever played, aged 5 or something and forever stuck in my memory. The remake is superb, soundtrack is great addition and overall a faithful recreation
I never played this but it just looks like a knockoff of Commander Keen 1-3. Same production house but the game looks almost exactly the same.
lol at the file sizes. the dos version if this game would haven been well under 500 KILO bytes.
Guess the manual for the original is a 300dpi scanned PDF with about 785 MB in size. :D
